Not all architectural fountains are conceived with the ambition of becoming an icon. However, the installation in Vitoria-Gasteiz, characterized by its inherent innocence and unexpected design, indeed achieved this. Imanol Marrodán's creation was specifically designed to complement the development of Lakua and to imbue a vast, contemporary, and still-evolving urban area with a distinct identity. This objective was realized through a simple yet powerful concept: transforming a sculptural element into a comprehensive urban experience.

The 20-meter-high installation is characterized by its curvilinear profile and the ethereal lightness of its apex, which evokes a dandelion suspended just before its seeds disperse. This seemingly delicate visual impression is anchored by a monumental presence and a highly deliberate integration with its site. From a distance, it served as a significant visual landmark; up close, it functioned as an engaging element, capable of captivating attention and redefining the spatial experience.

The most noteworthy aspect of this intervention is that it was never conceived as a sculpture to which a water sphere would subsequently be added. From the outset, water was an integral component of the work. It constituted an additional material within the project, as significant as the steel, the scale, or the silhouette.

In its original configuration, the water basin at the top triggered a water curtain that reinforced the dandelion motif and created a circular cascade around the piece. The result was both architectural and atmospheric. The sculpture took on movement, sound, and a character that changed depending on the light, the weather, or the time of day.

That is one of the most valuable aspects of architectural fountains when they are well integrated into public spaces: they not only beautify but also transform the perception of the location. They introduce visual freshness, provide a welcoming scale, and transform the environment from being merely a thoroughfare into an experience.

The water sphere as an integrated solution

In this particular instance, technology was required to serve a highly specific concept. The proposed solution incorporated a water sphere, approximately 3 meters in diameter and featuring 252 outlets, meticulously designed to generate a distinct, balanced, and cohesive aquatic form that harmonized with the sculptural language of the overall artwork.

The significance lay not merely in the visual effect, but in how seamlessly it integrated with the overall architectural composition. The aquatic sphere was not perceived as an extraneous element or an independent architectural flourish; rather, it completed the narrative of the piece and reinforced its original design intent.
